New Counselor

Summer 2024

Being a camp counselor is a job unlike any other job you have had. Nevertheless it is a job. It is a job where you will deeply effect the life of a child.

Camp is a special place. Campers grow and learn about themselves, try new things, discover hidden talents, and reach out without the fear of negative criticism. Leaders in the field of child development recognize the value of camp in providing the acknowledged needs of today's children. The camp experience is designed to help children mature socially, emotionally, intellectually, and morally.

Camp is a structured environment where children can live, play, and work with positive role models who listen, talk, relax, and reflect. It is through the fun and challenging activities that campers learn to work together, make choices, take responsibility, develop creative skills, and gain confidence-building independence and self-reliance - necessary steps on a child's path to a healthy and productive life.

You will be a role model, the most important person in your camper's eyes; what you say and do, how you act, how sensitive and caring you are will have a profound impact and will be recorded in your campers memories for the rest of their lives.

Counselors are the main part of the OEL staff.  They teach all of the nature/science activities and interact directly with the campers and parents.  They lead/supervise the nature hike as well as free time.  Counselors teach two separate activities per week around nine times each.  Counselors are required to spend at least half of the lunch time with the campers, manage a bus stop twice during the summer, and supervise animal holding.  Additional duties/responsibilities may be assigned by a Director.

To be a Counselor with Outdoor Education Laboratory, you must have completed your Sophomore year in high school and have a good rapport with children -- a knowledge of nature is a plus.  You must be in the Greater Kansas City area and be able to work during the weekday most days during the summer.

As a Counselor, there are certain rules that you would be required to follow.  They are listed here so that you know what is expected of you before you apply.  Breaking these rules will result in your dismissal.
*  Ensure the safety and well-being of all campers and fellow staff members at all time
*  Be polite to campers and fellow staff members at all times.  No teasing of anyone will be tolerated.
*  Use appropriate language (no cussing)
*  Wear appropriate clothing
*  Have a positive professional attitude
*  Have all activities planned and ready to go to maximize camper learning and enjoyment
